Mission Statement
We strongly believe that the kimono should be recognized as a universal formal wear that is beyond cultural and ethnic boundaries. We would like to contribute ourselves to the development of such a movement, starting in New York City - where the world-wide fashion trend begins.
It is our utmost hope that people, both men and women, all over the world experience the beauty of the kimono and enjoy the kimono life style.
Background
Growing up, I became familiar with traditional Japanese culture.
In college, I studied Kabuki academically and became interested in traditional Japanese theater and its fashion, influenced by a famous stage director of the National Theatre, Prof. Koji Orita. I also studied Japanese folk art, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the history of the kimono. To learn more about the history of the kimono and movements in kimono style, I studied and took lessons for tea ceremony, classical Japanese dance and Noh dance.
To acquire more skills related to the kimono, I attended a kimono fashion school, and I learned kimono styling and traditional Japanese dress making. I became a certified master kimono instructor and started working as a professional kimono stylist. Furthermore, I learned styling of traditional Japanese stage costumes.
I founded “Kimono Hiro in NY” in September, 2008.
I realize that the kimono can be worn on limited occasions, Japanese stages or parties, outside Japan. Now I am working all over the US, and all over the world, for the purpose of spreading the magnificence and diversity of the kimono as fashion. As a kimono stylist, I am creating and presenting fashion works for various subjects.
